Wieso erfolgt eine mögliche Identifikation mit Dexter und eine darauffolgende parasoziale Beziehung, in der Empathie für ihn empfunden wird? Des Weiteren analysiert die Seminararbeit die Darstellungen der Gewalt, der Leichen, des Todes und des Blutes in der Pilotfolge. Im Vordergrund stehen hierfür die eingesetzten filmischen Mittel wie die der Kameraeinstellung, des Bildes, der Farben und der Musik. Inwieweit wird Gewalt als ästhetische Kunst dargestellt und inszeniert? Wirkt sie realistisch? Wie könnte sie möglicherweise auf den Zuschauer wirken? Für die jeweiligen Analysen werden entsprechende Szenen und Bilder aus der Pilotfolge genommen, die relevante Hinweise besitzen. Für das Untersuchen eines Bildes werden Screenshots von jeweiligen Momenten mit einer Zeitangabe benutzt, während bei den Szenenanalysen auf die Filmprotokolle nach Werner Faulstich und Helmut Korte zurückgegriffen wird. Hierbei werden die entsprechenden filmischen Mittel anhand ihrer Wirkung und Botschaft untersucht. Zunächst wird die Serie Dexter an sich vorgestellt und die Handlung der Pilotfolge anhand eines Sequenzprotokolls, auch nach Faulstich und Korte, erläutert. Hiernach folgt eine kurze Anmerkung zu der Serie als epischer movie und Qualitätsfernsehen, wobei erklärt wird, durch welche Besonderheiten neuerer US-Serien auffallen. Danach folgen die Analysen über Dexter als Identifikationsfigur, in denen zunächst untersucht wird, inwieweit Dexter sympathisch wirkt und wie sein Leben in der Gesellschaft erfolgt. Daran anknüpfend wird im Vordergrund stehen, wie der Gewaltakt an sich gezeigt wird und warum Leichen und Blut ästhetisch und kunstvoll wirken. Als Grundlage dient hierbei die Pilotfolge der Serie Dexter. Auf den weiteren Verlauf der Serie wird nur bei relevanten zusätzlichen Informationen eingegangen.
